N-phobia   1 comment

I recently had the need to purchase a new 2/70 colinear antenna. The previous one had lasted 28 years, and survived being erected at three different properties.

I ordered one from a very well-known emporium (no advertising, I’m not on commission). I spoke to a very helpful person in the sales department. She took my order, and said she would include an N-type to SO239 adapter for free. She was quite taken aback when I said I would not need one as I would be fitting an N-type plug to the coax.

She said every antenna left the store with an adapter as using a PL259 on the coax was almost universal.

Is this the case? Is there something difficult about fitting the N-type plug? Please let me know what I am missing.

Stuart, GD0OUD

P.S. I was still sent an adapter. This is of such poor quality I would insult the bin if I threw it away. If I remember, I’ll bring it down to the shack so everyone can go “OOOOOOOH” at it.

IOMARS please to announce new Foundation Course in December   Leave a comment

IOMARS are running a foundation course based at the Shack in Ballasalla on Wednesday nights. The theory course will be on the 8/9 the of December at the shack with the exam at 14:00 on Sunday the 9th December 2018. The cost will be £27.50 for members and £37.50 for non members. We can’t do the practical on air until you are registered and need to give at least 2 weeks notice to the RSGB for the exam. I would ask you to fill in the attached application form ASAP and get it to the IOMARS along with payment either via the shack on Wednesday or any committee member. We will not be able to take any applications after November the 24th. It will be in time for Christmas so you can tell your relatives you want that new rig for Christmas.Any queries please email iomars@manx.net

Full Licence Course starts this Wednesday, 24th October 2018.   Leave a comment

The IOMARS Full Licence Course starts this Wednesday, 24 October at 19.00 in the Malew Scout Building in Ballasalla. The course will be upstairs rather than in the main hall.

The requested manuals have now arrived so they will be ready for collection.

I will be dealing mainly with passive components, resistors, capacitors and inductors and combinations there off, in this first session, so please bring along some of your own for measurement. I will have an LCR meter with me, which can also measure ESR, Q and phase angle.

See most of you there this Wednesday.
